A New Voice on an Established Frequency

Sfera-FM is a genuinely recent addition to Rivne's airwaves, starting test broadcasts on May 10, 2024, before going fully official on September 10 that same year. The station's parent company, TRK Sfera-TV, won the license for 102.2 MHz through a competition run by Ukraine's National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting, according to Sfera-TV's own announcement of the launch. That frequency had a previous tenant too: the station ROKS had broadcast on 102.2 MHz from April 2023 until Sfera-FM took over, a changeover that reflects how quickly Ukraine's local licensing landscape can shift even amid difficult broadcasting conditions nationwide.

Built on a Longer Local Media Foundation

While the radio station itself is new, its parent company is not. TRK Sfera-TV has operated in Rivne and the wider Rivne Oblast since 2008, running round-the-clock broadcasting aimed at developing the region's information space and supporting local journalism standards, according to a profile from Ukraine's Culture and Creativity resource. The television side of the company traces back even further, launching on cable on November 26, 2007, and later expanding into digital T2 broadcasting on March 5, 2022, just weeks before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine reshaped daily life and media operations across the country. By 2017, Sfera-TV had also extended its reach into Lutsk in neighboring Volyn Oblast, giving the company a regional footprint well beyond Rivne alone before its radio arm ever went on air.

Broadcasting From "The Amber Capital of Ukraine"

Rivne itself carries a distinctive regional identity that shapes the character of local media built around it. First mentioned in historical records in 1282, the city passed through Polish-Lithuanian, Russian, and Polish control before becoming part of Soviet Ukraine in 1944, and it is known today as the amber capital of Ukraine thanks to rich local amber deposits and a jewelry trade built around them. A station covering hourly local news for a city with that layered history gives Sfera-FM listeners a direct line to regional developments that national broadcasters rarely cover in depth.

Tune In

Barely a year into its official broadcasting life, Sfera-FM has already stepped into an established frequency with an established parent company behind it, mixing Ukrainian and European pop and rock with news coverage built specifically for Rivne and its surrounding communities. Stream it free on Radio Shuffle to hear what local radio sounds like in one of western Ukraine's historic cities.
