Built by a Berlin radio veteran
Schlager Radio is operated by radio B2 GmbH under managing partner Oliver Dunk, a figure with deep roots in Berlin's commercial radio scene. According to the Berliner Kurier, Dunk started out as a teenage reporter for RIAS back in 1978 and later worked at Hundert,6, the station that went on air on April 10, 1987 as the first commercial private radio station in Berlin. That history helps explain why, when Dunk launched his own station, the format leaned so heavily into German-language music: half the playlist built around domestic hits, under a mission he summed up at launch as wanting listeners to finally hear more German songs on the radio.
A music genre built for singing along
Schlager itself is one of the oldest continuous threads in German pop culture. According to Wikipedia's overview of the genre, the style traces back to West Germany, East Germany, and Austria in the 1950s, with roots stretching further into operetta and the catchy, radio-friendly songwriting of acts like the Comedian Harmonists in the 1920s and 1930s. The genre hit its commercial peak in the 1960s and 1970s, when singers like Rex Gildo and Heino dominated the charts with simple, sentimental songs about love and sunny holidays, a sound built from the ground up to be easy to hum along to on first listen.
Growing reach across Berlin and Brandenburg
The station has steadily expanded its terrestrial footprint since its early FM days in Berlin. By June 2013, Schlager Radio's reach had grown enough to add distribution across Tele Columbus cable networks, and the station has continued building out its broadcast infrastructure since. More recently, according to WorldDAB, the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg granted the station a DAB+ license on channel 10B, making it receivable across the entire Berlin and Brandenburg region on digital radio. In February 2025, Schlager Radio also joined Radiozentrale, the German commercial radio industry association, a sign of how far the station has grown from its single-frequency Berlin beginnings.
