RTL Radio streams hit music live from Luxembourg, the long-running broadcaster once known across Germany simply as Radio Luxemburg. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.
The Station That Smuggled Rock and Roll Into Germany
This station's German-language service first went on air on July 15, 1957, as Radio Luxemburg, broadcasting from the Grand Duchy into a country where domestic radio was still locked into a strict non-commercial, classical-leaning model. According to its own history, the station, alongside the Saarland-based pirate signal Europe 1, broke that monopoly simply by existing across the border, carrying advertising to German radios for the first time and introducing listeners on both sides of the Cold War divide to rock and roll, bebop, and cool jazz long before domestic stations caught up.
That outsider role shaped the station's identity for decades. It was renamed RTL Hörfunk in 1988, became RTL - Der Oldiesender in 1992, and kept evolving as German commercial radio matured around it.
From Luxembourg City to Berlin, and Beyond
On July 1, 2015, the station rebranded as RTL Radio - Deutschlands Hit-Radio and made a symbolic move: its studios relocated from Luxembourg City to Berlin, even as the station kept its Luxembourg-rooted name and its FM frequencies in Luxembourg, the German border regions, and eastern Belgium. The hot adult contemporary format that followed that rebrand carried the station for over a decade.
In June 2026, the station changed its name and format again, moving toward a feel-good music identity aimed at listeners who grew up on 1980s pop and everything that followed. It remains part of RTL Group, sitting alongside sister stations including 89.0 RTL and 104.6 RTL, broadcasting nationally via cable, DAB+, satellite, and the internet.
What You'll Actually Hear
