Born from a Cold War broadcaster
The parent station, 94,3 rs2, traces its frequency back to RIAS 2, the second channel of Radio in the American Sector, the US-run broadcaster that served West Berlin during the Cold War. When RIAS was restructured after German reunification, its second program was privatized on June 1, 1992, and relaunched under the new name 94,3 RS2 on the same Berlin frequency, according to a history of the station. In its early years, the station famously paid listeners 500 Deutsche Marks in cash if they could show they had publicly switched over to 94,3 RS2, an aggressive tactic that helped it build an audience fast in the crowded post-reunification Berlin radio market.
Growing into Berlin and Brandenburg's biggest mix
By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the station had expanded its FM coverage into the Oderland, Uckermark, and southern Brandenburg regions, growing from a Berlin-only signal into a two-state broadcaster now marketed as "Berlins bester Musik-Mix." That reach let the station build out a family of themed digital spin-off streams beyond its main FM signal, including RS2 Kulthits, RS2 2000er Hits, RS2 Deutsch, and RS2 Relax, each pulling a different slice out of the main station's playlist.
What makes the Relax stream different
Where the flagship station runs a full adult contemporary format with hourly news and service updates for Berlin and Brandenburg listeners, RS2 Relax strips that back to pure music, taking the same current hits and running them through acoustic arrangements and relax-style remixes. It is built specifically as background listening for the office or a quiet evening rather than a full-service local station, giving listeners the RS2 sound without the news breaks.
