Built on Fifteen Years of a Lausanne Station That Didn't Survive

Rouge FM launched on July 1, 2005, explicitly built on the experience of Radio Framboise, a Lausanne station with fifteen years on air that collapsed into bankruptcy that same summer (BAKOM). Businessman Hugues de Montfalcon bought Radio Framboise just before it folded and used its FM concession, granted May 1, 2005, to launch Rouge FM with a specific mission: become the reference radio station for young people across French-speaking Switzerland. By 2007, the station's own concession renewal request described it as the leading private radio station in Suisse Romande among young people and young adults, a position built in just two years.

A Growing Regional Group

Rouge FM's ambitions extended beyond its original Vaud broadcast area. The station later secured a federal concession to expand into Geneva, and in 2007 the broader Groupe Rouge took majority control of Geneva's struggling Radio Lac, which was rebranded Yes FM in 2009. Facing the economics of running multiple youth-oriented stations independently, Rouge FM and Yes FM eventually partnered with Média One, the group behind LFM and One FM, for advertising sales, a consolidation typical of Switzerland's small but competitive regional radio market.

A Decade Built for Its Own Dedicated Channel

The 90s earned a hold on nostalgia radio precisely because the decade swung so hard between extremes. Grunge broke out of Seattle in the late 1980s and went fully mainstream with Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind, turning disillusioned, anti-polish rock into a genuine global force. By the back half of the decade the pendulum had swung completely the other way, with Backstreet Boys and NSYNC built around tightly choreographed routines and romantic ballads, while pop divas like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera redefined what a female pop star's image could be. A single decade channel built from that range, grunge's rawness, boy bands' polish, and pop's star power, has more tonal variety to draw from than almost any other ten-year stretch in modern music.
