On May 1, 1999, a broadcaster in Magdeburg did something no private German station had done before: it signed on using the country's new DAB digital standard, becoming the first privately licensed broadcaster in Germany cleared for regular digital operation, a full year before it held a single FM frequency (radiojournal.de). That station was ROCKLAND, and the first song it ever played was Joan Jett's "I Love Rock'n'Roll," a fitting opener for a station that has spent the twenty five years since delivering alternative, classic, metal, punk, and rock across Sachsen-Anhalt (radioszene.de).

Rock Radio That Was Ready Before Its Signal Was

ROCKLAND's FM license didn't arrive until a year after that digital launch. The station officially went on air over the airwaves on July 1, 2000, reaching listeners across Sachsen-Anhalt on frequencies like 98.3 FM in Halle, 98.7 FM in Magdeburg, and 94.1 FM in Dessau (rockland.fm). Being early to digital wasn't a gimmick either. It meant the station was broadcasting to an audience of barely 2,000 DAB-capable receivers in the entire state when it started, a real financial gamble on a format almost nobody could actually hear yet (radiojournal.de).

ROCKLAND is the rock-focused offshoot of radio SAW, the station that became Sachsen-Anhalt's first private broadcaster back in 1992 under the name Sachsen-Anhalt-Welle. Both stations still operate out of the same Funkhaus on Hansapark in Magdeburg, run by VMG Verlags- und Medien GmbH & Co. KG with the Oldenburg-based Nordwest-Zeitung as the main shareholder (Wikipedia). Ronny Schulz has directed programming for both stations since taking over as program chief in September 2023 (myonlineradio.de).

A Quarter Century of the Same Rock Promise

The station's pitch has barely changed since 1999: "100% Rock im Radio," a hundred percent rock, nothing else, delivered under the on-air call to action "Mach an und laut," turn it on and loud (radiosaw.de).

  • Classic rock backbone, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and ZZ Top anchor the daytime rotation with decades-old riffs that still fill the format's core hours.
  • Modern rock and metal, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Disturbed, and Shinedown give the playlist teeth beyond pure nostalgia.
  • Mainstream rock crossovers, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, and Kid Rock keep one foot in more radio-friendly territory without softening the guitars.
  • Veteran voices on air, longtime hosts like Ted Stanetzky, Toni Rupprecht, and Uwe Heuer share the schedule with newer additions such as Adrian Mützel, mixing decades of broadcasting instinct with fresher energy (radioszene.de).

Rock Music in a Region That Has to Fight for Its Stages

Rock culture in this part of Germany isn't guaranteed real estate. Rockstation Halle, a nonprofit club and rehearsal space in nearby Halle that hosted everything from rock'n'roll to metal to stoner rock for years, was ultimately forced to shut down for good after repeatedly losing its physical venue, a farewell the organizers described as proof of how hard it is for grassroots rock culture to hold onto a home in the region (rockstation-halle.com). Live rock still shows up constantly around Halle and Magdeburg through cover acts and tribute bands, from AC/DC coverbands to an Iron Maiden tribute act called Abratul, but stages come and go. A station broadcasting rock around the clock, on FM, DAB+, and online, gives the genre a home that doesn't depend on whoever currently owns the building.

Turn It On, Loud, Wherever You Are

ROCKLAND's signal travels further than its home state. DAB+ carries the station into the Leipzig area on its own channel, and from September 2018 through January 2022 it was also broadcast into Berlin and much of Brandenburg (rockland.fm). Listeners can follow the station on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Spotify, and YouTube, reach the studio directly through a dedicated WhatsApp line, or grab the dedicated iOS and Android apps for anyone who wants ROCKLAND without a radio in the room at all.

Why It's Worth a Spot in Your Rotation

Most rock stations settle for either the classics or the new stuff. ROCKLAND has spent twenty five years refusing to pick a side, running AC/DC and Deep Purple next to Disturbed and Shinedown without treating either era as filler. Add a station that was technologically ahead of its own market by a full year before it even had FM listeners, and you get a broadcaster that has consistently bet on rock mattering, long before it was the safe choice.
