Rock Antenne streams rock across its full range, soft rock, classic rock and the latest releases through to heavy metal, billing itself as Germany's first dedicated rock radio station. It broadcasts nationwide today on DAB+ alongside its FM coverage in Bavaria, and anyone can stream the main channel live and free, no separate app or sign-up required.
From a Bavarian DAB Experiment to a National Network
Rock Antenne began broadcasting in 1995 as an early, DAB-only experiment covering Bavaria, moving into regular full-time FM operation on October 18, 1999 from its base in Ismaning near Munich, according to MünchenWiki's history of the station. The station is majority owned by Antenne Bayern, Germany's biggest private radio broadcaster, with regional broadcaster NWZ Funk und Fernsehen holding the remaining minority stake, though Rock Antenne has always run as a fully independent program rather than a spinoff of its parent's pop format.
One Station, More Than Two Dozen Spinoffs
What makes Rock Antenne distinctive is how it has used its growth. Rather than folding every subgenre into one general rock rotation, the network has built out more than 25 themed web streams since 2009, dedicating separate channels to hard rock, heavy metal, grunge, Deutschrock, punk rock and decade-specific streams covering the 70s, 80s and 90s. The flagship station stays the broad entry point, while the genre-specific streams exist for listeners who already know exactly what they want.
National Reach, Regional Roots
By 2020, Rock Antenne had expanded to nationwide DAB+ coverage across Germany, with an Austrian DAB+ service added the year before, turning what started as a single Bavarian test signal into a station heard across two countries, all while keeping its operational base in the same Ismaning studios where regular broadcasting began in 1999.
