A Bavarian station built one stream at a time
ROCK ANTENNE began broadcasting in April 1995 as a DAB-only experiment covering Bavaria, moving into regular FM operation on October 18, 1999 from its base in Ismaning, just outside Munich, according to the station's German Wikipedia entry. Rather than settle for a single broad rock format, the network started splitting itself apart: since December 2, 2009, it has run more than 25 themed web streams alongside its main signal, covering everything from Heavy Metal and Punk Rock to decade-specific channels for the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The Alternative stream is one of those dedicated channels, built for listeners who want international alternative rock without it being folded into a broader classic rock rotation.
Majority owned, nationally reachable
The network is majority owned by Antenne Bayern, with a minority stake held by regional broadcaster NWZ Funk und Fernsehen. What began as a single Bavarian signal has since grown into a nationwide DAB+ presence across Germany, with an Austrian DAB+ service added in 2019, giving a stream like Alternative reach far beyond the region its call letters suggest.
What "alternative" means on this channel
The Alternative stream draws from the same lineage that gave ROCK ANTENNE separate channels for grunge and hard rock: guitar-driven rock that sat outside the mainstream when it first emerged, built around bands who traded polish for edge. Splitting that catalog into its own channel lets the network serve listeners who want that specific sound continuously, rather than waiting for it to surface between classic rock staples on the main frequency.
