Poland's first private station, born out of Solidarity
RMF FM went on air on January 15, 1990, becoming the first commercial radio station in Poland, founded by Stanisław Tyczyński, an activist from the Solidarity movement that had helped bring down communist rule in the country only months earlier, according to the station's broadcast history. Tyczyński built the station through the Kraków Foundation of Social Communication with an explicit mission baked into its founding charter: to propagate free social communication, reliable and objective information, and the free expression of opinions and views, values that had been suppressed under the old regime.
The station expanded fast through the early 1990s, adding satellite broadcasts in 1992 and a nationwide license by 1994, alongside a wave of local branches opened across Poland between 1993 and 1995. Its news operation built a reputation for showing up where the story was, including exclusive reporting from Baghdad during the 1998 Gulf crisis, and it later provided extensive coverage of both the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the 2010 Smolensk air disaster that killed the Polish president and dozens of other officials.
From Kraków foundation to German-owned market leader
German publisher Bauer Verlagsgruppe bought RMF FM outright in 2006 and still owns it today, with director Tadeusz Sołtys running day-to-day operations. Despite the change in ownership, the station has stayed Poland's dominant commercial broadcaster: as of early 2017 it commanded a 24.8 percent listenership share among Poles aged 15 to 75, the largest of any station in the country. RMF now runs a family of related channels alongside its main feed, including RMF Classic, RMF MAXX, and the rolling news station RMF24.
