RFM stands for Renascença FM, and it opened in its current form on 1 January 1987. It was created by the Catholic Church's broadcaster as a companion to Rádio Renascença, aimed at a younger and more urban audience. It arrived during the liberalisation of Portugal's radio spectrum, when private stations were multiplying, and it quickly became a leader with a contemporary hit format. Since then, as the RFM anniversary pages note, it has kept up a long rivalry with Rádio Comercial for the top spot in the Portuguese ratings.

RFM has an extensive FM network across mainland Portugal, with frequencies ranging from 89.6 to 107.7 MHz, plus transmitters in Madeira and the Azores.
