Launched with a party in Vienna's 16th district
RES.Radio introduced itself to the city on April 20, 2019 with a soft-opening party called "Die Schöne" at a venue on Kuffnergasse in Vienna's 16th district, according to an archived event listing. The night spread sixteen acts, artists, musicians, and DJs from Vienna and beyond, across two spaces billed as "The Gallery" and "The Cave," with the five-euro door charge going straight back into buying more radio equipment. A full "Hard Opening" followed about six weeks later, and the station has broadcast out of Villa Schapira in Vienna's 18th district ever since.
Built to make room for subcultural genres
The station's stated mission is to strengthen and present subcultural music genres that mainstream Austrian radio tends to overlook, while also running readings, talks, and discussions that range across contemporary culture, politics, literature, and philosophy. That dual identity, part music platform, part public forum, fits a station that operates as a membership association explicitly structured to make no profit rather than chase ratings.
Broadcasting into a city with a real underground pedigree
Vienna has a genuine claim to underground credibility that RES.Radio taps into. The city's 1990s scene turned it into what German outlet Vice has called a rave and downbeat metropolis, a shift traced partly to a 1992 party at Vienna's Angewandte university featuring Underground Resistance's founders, and carried forward by acts like Kruder & Dorfmeister who put Viennese downbeat on the global map. RES.Radio joins a longer-running community broadcasting scene in the city too, following in the footsteps of Orange 94.0, Austria's pioneering community radio station, which has documented its own history of pirate broadcasters fighting for airtime since the late 1990s.
