A launch built around one radio defection
KRRL, branded Real 92.3, relaunched with its current hip-hop format on March 9, 2015, built around a single seismic move in Los Angeles radio: Big Boy, who had hosted mornings at rival station Power 106 since 1997, jumped to the new iHeartMedia station, taking his massive following with him. According to Inside Radio's coverage of the launch, Big Boy pulled out every favor he had for his first week on the new station, bringing in hip-hop royalty including Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar as guests.
Second place within weeks
The gamble worked almost immediately. In Nielsen's March 2015 ratings survey, Real 92.3 nearly doubled its share among listeners aged 18 to 34, jumping from 3.2 to 6.3 percent and landing in second place in that demographic, trailing only its own CHR sister station KIIS-FM. That kind of overnight ratings jump is rare in local radio, and it turned what had been a rebrand into one of the most closely watched format battles in recent Los Angeles hip-hop radio history.

Real 92.3 is owned by iHeartMedia and now serves as the flagship home for Big Boy's Neighborhood, the morning show built around the same host and persona that made his previous decades at Power 106 must-listen radio for Los Angeles hip-hop fans. That continuity, combined with the station's original frequency dating back to its first air date of December 29, 1948, gives Real 92.3 both a fresh format and a genuinely old Los Angeles broadcast history behind it.
