Announced at an Animation Festival, Built for Ages 2 to 10
Rai Radio Kids was announced in 2017 by then Rai director general Antonio Campo Dall'Orto at the Cartoons on the Bay animation festival, conceived as a completely advertising-free digital radio channel built specifically for children between the ages of 2 and 10, according to Sorrisi e Canzoni TV's coverage of the launch. The channel was built with its own schedule, hosts and programming structure designed to function like a genuine radio station rather than a simple looping playlist, with its production base in Turin under coordinator Gianfranco Noferi.
Fairy Tales as a Core Format
Among its signature offerings, Rai Radio Kids runs Radio Fiabe, a large library of audio fairy tales available to young listeners, alongside a companion section called I Libri di Radio Kids built around children's books. That focus on storytelling rather than music alone sets the channel apart from a typical kids' music station, leaning into audio as a format for narrative rather than just songs.
A Role in Marking Radio's Own Centenary
In 2024, Rai Radio Kids partnered with the Regional School Office for Lazio to mark 100 years of Italian radio broadcasting, building a dedicated initiative aimed at schools around the milestone. That partnership reflects the channel's dual identity, a children's entertainment outlet that also carries some of the same cultural weight RAI brings to its adult-facing programming.
