Spun Off From Italy's Flagship News Channel
Rai Radio 1 Sport launched as a digital spin-off of Rai Radio 1, Italy's news and talk flagship, arriving alongside a sister channel, Rai Radio 2 Indie, as part of an expansion that pushed Rai Radio's total channel count from 10 to 12, according to Goal.com's coverage of the launch. The channel was built to carry sports content across DAB, DAB+, satellite, digital terrestrial, web and app platforms from day one, rather than staying confined to a single transmission method.
An Outlet for Exclusive Event Coverage
Rai Radio 1 itself carries decades of sports broadcasting history behind it, including Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto, the pioneering football commentary program that has run since 1960. Rai Radio 1 Sport extends that tradition into a dedicated digital lane, giving RAI room to carry exclusive sporting events and extended coverage that wouldn't fit inside the flagship channel's broader news and talk schedule.
