Built in a Family Home on Avenida Huayna Cápac
Radioactiva, often written FM88, launched in September 1995 as a small project run by brothers Fernando and Patricio Reino out of their own family home on Avenida Huayna Cápac in Cuenca, according to El Mercurio's coverage of the station's 30th anniversary. Fernando Reino, who has stayed with the station as one of its on-air pillars, described those early years bluntly: limited funds made things complicated, but the team held onto its passion for radio anyway.
The Bet on Sports That Changed the Station
About seventeen years into its run, Radioactiva made a programming decision that reshaped its audience: it added dedicated sports coverage. Reino called the move an acierto, a smart bet, and the sports program that grew out of it, Área 88, became one of the most-listened-to sports shows in Cuenca. That shift turned a station built around music and variety into one where sports talk now shares the spotlight with the playlist.
From a Home Studio to Avenida Paucarbamba
Radioactiva eventually outgrew the Reino family home and moved to its current headquarters on Avenida Paucarbamba, a facility with modern studios and updated broadcast technology. The move tracks three decades of growth from a single-room setup with borrowed equipment to a station with the infrastructure to run music, sports and entertainment programming across Cuenca and, through streaming, far beyond it.
Thirty Years, Marked With a Gala
Cuenca's cultural community marked the station's milestone on September 24, 2025, when Radioactiva held an anniversary gala at the historic Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz, bringing together staff, longtime listeners and local media figures to look back on three decades on air. Few independent Ecuadorian stations make it that far starting from a family living room.
