What Radio ZET Is
Radio ZET is a commercial music and information station with an adult contemporary format, broadcasting nationwide in Polish. According to Wikipedia's entry on the station, it held around 13.6 percent of listening among people aged 15 to 75 in early 2023 survey data, which made it the second most-listened-to radio station in the country. If you want a picture of what mainstream Polish radio sounds like, this is a good place to begin.
From Radio Gazeta to Radio ZET
The station went on air on September 28, 1990, founded in Warsaw by journalist Andrzej Wojciechowski, who was also its first editor-in-chief. It began as Radio Gazeta, and the shorter name Radio ZET was adopted during the 1990 presidential election campaign so the station could keep its political independence. Radio ZET was among the first private stations in Poland, arriving just after the country's first commercial radio opened in January 1990, as RadioPolska's history of the free-market years describes.
Going National in 1994
Radio ZET won a licence for nationwide broadcasting in 1994, and from June of that year it began switching on transmitters in more Polish cities. That step turned a Warsaw start-up into a national name, and it has stayed in the top tier of Polish radio ever since.
A Changing Cast of Owners
Ownership has moved several times. The Lagardère group, also behind Europe 1, took a majority stake at one point, and Eurozet became the holding company in 2007. Czech Media Invest bought the station in April 2018, and in 2019 SFS Ventures acquired 60 percent with Agora holding 40 percent. Since 2023 Agora has been the majority shareholder.
