Born on a ship anchored off the Dutch coast
Radio Veronica did not start in a studio. It launched on May 6, 1960 as an offshore pirate station, broadcasting from the lightship Borkum Riff moored off the Dutch coast, according to the station's broadcast history. A group of independent radio retailers set it up specifically to give Dutch listeners an alternative to the state-licensed broadcasters of the day, reasoning that more interesting programming would sell more radio sets. The station grew popular enough that it upgraded in 1964 to a converted fishing trawler, the MV Norderney, fitted with stronger transmission equipment, and broadcast a lively adult contemporary format full of polished jingles, commercials, and hourly news updates.
That freewheeling era ended on August 31, 1974, when new Dutch anti-pirate legislation forced Radio Veronica off the air for good. The law had been building for years, driven partly by the 1971 Mebo II fire, a disaster aboard a ship broadcasting for rival station Radio Nordsee International that pushed lawmakers to finally act against unlicensed offshore broadcasting.
From outlaw ship to licensed broadcaster
Rather than disappear, Radio Veronica's own staff formed the Veronica Broadcasting Organisation and applied for a legal license, relaunching on December 28, 1975. In a twist for a station born out of rebellious pop radio, its first legal incarnation was a classical music service on Hilversum 4, about as far from its pirate-ship roots as a format could get. The Veronica name has stayed influential in Dutch radio ever since: Radio 538, one of the country's biggest stations today, took its own name directly from the old offshore wavelength Veronica once broadcast on. Radio Veronica itself now operates under Sky Radio Group, alongside a separate Veronica television channel that launched in 2003.
