Born at the birthplace of German cinema
Radio Teddy began broadcasting on August 6, 2005 from Medienstadt Babelsberg in Potsdam, founded by Uwe Schneider and Uly Köhler, according to the station's own history. The location is not incidental. Babelsberg has been home to German film production since the silent era, and that heritage shows up directly in Radio Teddy's ownership structure, where production company Filmpark Babelsberg GmbH holds a five percent stake alongside majority owner IR Holding GmbH and co-founder Schneider.
The station marketed itself as "Germany's first children's and family radio" at launch, though the non-commercial children's station Radijojo had actually beaten it to air in Berlin two years earlier, in August 2003. What set Radio Teddy apart was its full-service, all-day structure built for an entire household rather than just kids: a family-oriented morning show, programming aimed at parents through the late morning, whole-family content into the early evening, and audio dramas and bedtime stories once the day winds down. The station also caps its own advertising at six minutes per hour and refuses ads for alcohol, medication, or other content deemed unsuitable for a children's audience.
The channel built entirely around requests
Teddy Cool grew out of that main schedule as a dedicated music program in October 2014, built around the songs young listeners actually ask to hear rather than a fixed station playlist. It expanded beyond Radio Teddy's regional FM footprint in Berlin-Brandenburg to reach a nationwide audience through DAB+ digital radio and online streaming, giving kids across Germany, not just Potsdam and Berlin, a channel shaped by their own requests.
