Founded in 1976 by a Man Who Named It After a Mountain
The Radio Subasio name traces back to 1976, when Mario Settimi founded the station at Viole di Assisi, in the province of Perugia, naming it after Monte Subasio, the mountain on whose slopes the broadcaster was born. Following Settimi's death in 2010, the regional council of Umbria paid tribute to him as a pioneer of Italian private broadcasting, with councillor Maria Rosi recalling that in 1976 he had the courage and strength of ideas that, alongside two partners, built the station into one of the country's leading private radio brands. The company remains in family hands today, with his daughter Rita Settimi and son Marco Settimi running it as directors.
Acquired by Mediaset, Still Rooted in Assisi
Radio Subasio's reach grew significantly in 2017, when the Mediaset group acquired the station along with its sister outlet Radio Suby, folding it into the national Radio Mediaset family alongside stations like Radio 105, R101 and Virgin Radio, according to coverage from Sorrisi e Canzoni TV. That deal extended the station's coverage well beyond central Italy without moving its roots away from Assisi, the Umbrian hill town where it started. The flagship station built real cultural weight over the decades too. When longtime on-air voice Roberto Gentile died, tributes poured in from major Italian artists including Laura Pausini and Emma Marrone, a sign of how deeply the station's presenters had embedded themselves in the national music scene.
The Music-Only Spin-Off
Radio Subasio Collection exists as a dedicated, talk-free extension of that main station, running continuous Italian pop and rock from the 1970s through the 1990s mixed with international adult contemporary hits.
