A Spin-Off From Saxony-Anhalt's First Private Station
Rock Balladen is one of dozens of themed digital streams run by Radio SAW, which signed on air on September 8, 1992 as the first privately owned radio station in Saxony-Anhalt. Its name is short for Sachsen-Anhalt-Welle, Saxony-Anhalt Wave, though the station now uses SAW simply as a brand. The parent station runs a Current-based Adult Contemporary format built around 1980s and 1990s pop and rock hits mixed with today's charts, operated by VMG Verlags- und Medien GmbH & Co. KG under the slogan "Superhits fürs SAW Land, jeden Tag den ganzen Tag."
Broadcasting From the Harz's Highest Peak
Radio SAW's main FM signal reaches far beyond its home state thanks to a 100 kilowatt transmitter on the Brocken, the highest summit in the Harz mountains and in northern Germany. That single frequency carries the station's sound into parts of Lower Saxony, Thuringia, and even into Nordhessen and Ostwestfalen in North Rhine-Westphalia, giving the brand a reach well beyond the "SAW Land" its name describes.
Dozens of Streams, One Built for Ballads
Alongside its main FM broadcast, Radio SAW runs a wide family of digital-only streams split by decade and mood, including dedicated 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s channels alongside genre-specific feeds for schlager and urban music. Rock Balladen fits into that family as the station's home for slower, emotionally driven rock, the kind of soft rock and power ballads built for a late-night drive rather than a Saturday night playlist.
