Radio San Luchino streams music, news and talk free on Radio Shuffle, broadcasting on FM across Bologna and its province in Emilia-Romagna. Known locally as "Bolognese doc dal 1978," it has spent decades building a reputation as one of the hills above the city's most recognizable voices.
Born Out of a Restaurant Owner's Record Collection
The station exists because of Franco Piancastelli, who opened a restaurant called Il Sanluchino on Colle della Guardia, the hill overlooking Bologna that is home to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. Piancastelli's own passion for music led him to open a disco next door to the restaurant, and in 1978 that passion turned into a radio station built to satisfy the requests of his restaurant's own customers, according to a history of the station. Few Italian local stations can trace their origin story directly back to a dinner crowd asking for more music.
The Hosts Who Took It to Third Place
Radio San Luchino's climb up the local ratings had a lot to do with two specific voices. Sergio Donati joined in 1984, bringing music and listener dedications to the early evening slot, and Bruna Zamboni took over the midday programming the following year. Together they built the kind of listener loyalty that, by 1986, pushed Radio San Luchino to third place among Bologna's most-listened-to radio stations, a remarkable climb for an operation that began as a side project attached to a hillside restaurant barely a decade earlier.
A Permanent Home on Via delle Tofane
The station eventually outgrew its original hillside setup. In October 2002, Radio San Luchino moved into new headquarters on Via delle Tofane in Bologna, the address it still broadcasts from on 104.7 FM today. That move marked the station's transition from a restaurant-adjacent curiosity into a fully professional local broadcaster with a fixed studio built to last.
Still Talking to Bologna and Its Province
The station's own pitch to advertisers, "Parla a migliaia di persone a Bologna e provincia," speaks to thousands of people across Bologna and its province, sums up exactly what Radio San Luchino has stayed focused on for more than four decades. Current programming includes Gran Mattinata in the morning, the magazine show Mappamondo and Frequenza Latina for listeners who want Latin music mixed into their day, alongside the news and talk segments that have been part of the format since the beginning.
