100% Austrian Music, With Austropop at the Heart

Listen Now

Radio Rot Weiß Rot is an Austrian radio station that plays only music from Austria, with classic Austropop at its heart, and you can stream it free on Radio Shuffle. Its slogan is "100% Musik aus Österreich," and the name comes from the colours of the Austrian flag: red, white, red.

What You Will Hear

According to German Wikipedia, the station is aimed at listeners aged 35 to 59 and focuses on the golden age of classic Austropop, with current Austrian releases mixed in. It is a talkative station by music-radio standards, with a large share of spoken content on culture, information, contemporary art and entertainment. Moderated programming runs from 6 in the morning until 8 in the evening, with hourly news, weather and traffic. Special shows include Endlich im Radio, which showcases newcomers, Kraut & Rüben, which digs into niche music, and Promi-Playlist, in which well-known Austrians pick their favourite songs.

A Very Recent Launch

Radio Rot Weiß Rot is a newcomer. It began broadcasting on 21 June 2024 as one of 28 stations to start on Austria's nationwide DAB+ multiplex, MUX III, and is operated by kronehit Radio BetriebsgmbH. Wikipedia notes that Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen inaugurated it. Besides DAB+, it reaches listeners through apps, smart speakers, Radioplayer and its own website, rotweissrot.fan, which is exactly why it is easy to find on Radio Shuffle.

Why Austropop Deserves a Station

Austropop is the sound of Austria singing in its own voice. As Wikipedia's Austropop entry explains, the genre emerged in the late 1960s and enjoyed its heyday in the 1970s and up to the mid-1980s. Its start is often credited to Wolfgang Ambros's song "Da Hofa" in 1971, and what sets it apart from German pop is the use of Austrian dialects in the lyrics, often alongside traditional folk touches. Ambros himself made his name by translating Bob Dylan songs into Austrian German. A station devoted to that tradition, and to the artists still following it, fills a real gap in the digital radio landscape.
