A Name Born From Rejecting Every Other Option
According to the station's history on German Wikipedia, when Radio Regenbogen was being planned in the late 1980s, then-CEO Klaus Schunk was reviewing a list of proposed names from an agency and rejected them one by one. Frustrated, he tossed out "Radio Regenbogen," meaning Radio Rainbow, as a half-joking dismissal of the whole exercise. The room's reaction was so positive that the joke became the brand. It launched for real at 6:00 AM on March 25, 1988, broadcasting at 102.8 MHz with 10 kilowatts of power out of Heidelberg, initially reaching only the Rhein-Neckar area around Mannheim.

In September 1991 it absorbed Schwarzwald Radio, a Freiburg station that had launched in December 1987, gaining a second transmission frequency at 101.1 MHz from the Blauen tower and pushing its reach further into the Black Forest region. Today Radio Regenbogen runs regional studios in Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Freiburg, each producing localized news during peak hours while sharing a unified Baden-wide program, with the Baden & die Pfalz feed specifically serving listeners across the Palatinate and northern Baden corridor. Ownership sits with Radio Regenbogen GmbH & Co. KG, backed by regional publishing groups including Medien Union and Mediengruppe Dr. Haas, and since January 2021 the station has operated under the Audiotainment Südwest umbrella alongside sister stations RPR1, RockFM and bigFM.

Mannheim's role as the station's home base is not incidental to its identity.
