Radio Metal On: The Thrasher runs 24 hours a day playing nothing but thrash metal, one of five specialized channels that make up a small independent station broadcasting out of Marco de Canaveses, Portugal. There is no advertising, no corporate backing, just a station built by someone who wanted a place for the genre to live and kept expanding it for more than two decades.

Born as Metal Journey Radio in 2002

The station traces back to 2002, when it launched under the name Metal Journey Radio using RĂ¡dios do Sapo, a Portuguese web radio hosting service that no longer exists. According to station history records, it later moved through peer-to-peer streaming technology before rebranding as R.M.O., Radio Metal ON, and adopting Shoutcast, the streaming software that powered much of the early internet radio era.

One Channel Becomes Five

What started as a single stream covering everything from hard rock to extreme metal eventually split into dedicated channels once the audience and the catalog both grew large enough to support it. The station now runs The Heavy for hard rock, power and melodic metal, The Brutal for death, black and grindcore, The Thrasher exclusively for thrash, 80sHNH for eighties nostalgia, and Toxic for modern and diverse metal styles, letting a thrash-only listener skip past everything the other channels cover.

Built as a Hobby, Not a Business

Radio Metal ON describes itself as a hobby radio made by metal lovers for metal lovers, run without economic support beyond listener donations and carrying no advertising at all. That structure, unusual for a station that has survived more than twenty years online, keeps the channel's identity tied entirely to the taste of whoever is programming it rather than to what might keep sponsors happy.

Rebuilt on New Infrastructure in 2021

The station made a significant technical shift in 2021, moving from Shoutcast to Icecast streaming and switching its control panel from Centovacast to Azuracast, an upgrade that modernized the backend without changing what the station actually plays. Surviving a full platform migration is itself a small marker of longevity for an independent web radio project that has already outlasted the P2P streaming era it started with.

Nearly a quarter century after it launched as Metal Journey Radio on a hosting service that has since disappeared, Radio Metal ON is still standing, still splitting its output by subgenre, and The Thrasher is still playing thrash metal around the clock with the same no-frills, fan-built mission it started with.
