Sicily's All-Italian Music Station

Listen Now

Some stations chase international hits and global charts. Radio Margherita goes the other way entirely, playing only Italian music, with a range that runs from the 1960s all the way to today's releases. Broadcasting out of Palermo on 95.2 and 106.0 FM, with relays reaching Catania, Messina and the rest of Sicily, it has built its identity around a single, specific promise: whatever plays next will be Italian.

The station's own site traces a broadcasting license back to 9 March 1998, and decades on it still structures its day around a handful of signature features. "Tre canzoni di..." plays three representative songs by one artist twice daily, at 12:15 and 20:15, turning a regular time slot into a small retrospective. "Un Giorno Insieme" profiles a well-known singer, while "Top 25" tracks the current high-rotation chart and "Nuove uscite" covers new releases, so decades-old classics and this month's singles end up sharing the same schedule.

That range matters in a country where music carries real regional weight. Italian pop and cantautore songwriting, Neapolitan classics, and contemporary hits all draw on different scenes and different decades, and a station built entirely around keeping them Italian has to move between all of them in a single afternoon. Radio Margherita also runs podcast series exploring that identity directly, including "Sicilia, Voci, Territori e Identità," curated by Toti Sutera, which looks specifically at Sicilian culture and place.

The station has also been vocal about what it sees as unfair funding rules in Sicily's regional press subsidy system, arguing the criteria used to divide several million euros in support unfairly favor stations with larger declared staff numbers over ones, like itself, that claim reach across all nine Sicilian provinces. It is the kind of dispute that rarely makes headlines outside Italy, but it says something about how seriously a station built on local and national identity takes its place in that landscape.

Radio Margherita streams free on Radio Shuffle for anyone who wants an all-Italian soundtrack, from Sicily or anywhere else in the world.
