Born From Spain's Biggest Sports Newspaper
Radio Marca launched on February 1, 2001, as a genuine first for Spanish broadcasting, the country's first radio station with national coverage built specifically around sports content. According to academic coverage of its founding, the station grew out of an initiative by Grupo Recoletos, the media group that had owned the Marca sports newspaper since 1984 and later became part of Unidad Editorial, extending the Marca name from print into a dedicated audio format for the first time.
That strategy paid off quickly. By 2008, Radio Marca was averaging 447,000 daily listeners, making it the leading thematic, or specialized-format, radio station in all of Spain, a position few single-topic stations manage to hold nationally.
A Digital-First Relaunch for Its 20th Anniversary
Radio Marca marked its twentieth anniversary in 2021 with a deliberate repositioning toward digital platforms under director Juan Ignacio Gallardo, and the numbers backed up the strategy. Within a year of the relaunch, the station was drawing 1.8 million unique browsers to its website in a single month and reaching 1.724 million unique listeners across digital platforms, racking up nearly 2.93 million total listening hours and more than 500,000 program downloads. Shows like La Pizarra de Quintana and the podcast Saludos cordiales, hosted by Pablo Juanarena, became flagship names in that digital push, with Saludos cordiales passing a million downloads and earning an Ondas Award nomination along the way.
