Radio Kiss Kiss streams soul, funk, and disco live from Naples, one of the first free radio stations to go on air in the Campania region during Italy's mid-1970s broadcasting boom. Press play on Radio Shuffle and it streams instantly, free, with no account or app download required.
A radio station born inside a disco club
The station's story starts on September 1, 1976, when Ciro Niespolo, a Naples fruit and vegetable merchant who also owned a disco club called Kiss Kiss, launched a small radio station under the same name, officially adopting the Radio Kiss Kiss name on September 12 that year, according to an account of the station's origins. Niespolo partnered with Salvatore Capobianco, a medical school graduate with a genuine passion for both discos and radio, who became the station's artistic director, handling everything from DJing to program direction to the technical side of running a broadcast.
The original idea was modest: simply extend the music playing at the Kiss Kiss disco on Saturday and Sunday nights out over the airwaves. It launched during Italy's free radio movement, a wave of independent stations that sprang up across the country in the mid-1970s after the state broadcasting monopoly cracked open. In a period when foreign music dominated Italian airwaves, Radio Kiss Kiss took the opposite approach and focused almost entirely on Italian music, a bet that paid off with what accounts describe as surprising early success.
From one Naples disco to a national network
What started as a single disco's side project grew into a broadcaster with real national reach. Radio Kiss Kiss expanded from Naples to open offices in Rome and Milan, and it now distributes its signal across Italy via FM and DAB, free-to-air satellite on Hotbird, a dedicated channel on Sky Italia, and internet streaming, according to the station's broadcast profile.
