A Reunification Experiment
Fritz has a distinctive origin. It launched on 1 March 1993 at 6 in the morning, at first as a joint project of SFB in West Berlin and ORB in Brandenburg, growing out of two predecessors, the Brandenburg youth station Rockradio B and the SFB youth station Radio 4U. As German Wikipedia puts it, it was an experiment and one of the first East-West media projects after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It began broadcasting from the former East German radio studios on Nalepastraße in Berlin, before the editorial team moved to Potsdam-Babelsberg in late 1993.
More Than a Radio Station
Fritz is also a brand in Berlin's live scene. It runs the FritzClub venue, organises the Neue DeutschPoeten festival for German-language artists and supports newcomers with the New Music Award. That mix of radio, club and festival is part of why it has become a rare public youth station with real cultural credibility.
