Part of a Post-Independence Broadcasting Boom

Radio Fortuna broadcasts inside a private radio industry that barely existed before North Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The country's first private radio station, Kanal 77, signed on that same year, and what came next has been described by media researchers as a broadcasting "big bang": within a few years of independence, roughly 250 private radio and television broadcasters had gone on air across the country, according to Media Ownership Monitor's history of North Macedonian media. That explosive growth eventually needed structure, and the country's Broadcasting Council, established in 1997, took over licensing, allocating four national broadcast licenses and 203 local ones, 123 of them for radio. Radio Fortuna operates within that same licensed local radio landscape, one small but durable piece of a media scene that transformed almost overnight.

Good Music, No Complications

The station keeps its mission statement short and direct: "We want good music." That translates into a playlist built primarily around Macedonian pop and rock, along with hits from across the former Yugoslav region, with a particular lean toward Croatian pop and rock acts that remain popular throughout the Balkans. Rather than chasing a narrow genre niche, Radio Fortuna positions itself as a broadly appealing pop station for Skopje listeners who want familiar regional hits without a specialist format getting in the way.

Broadcasting From Skopje's Aerodrom District

Radio Fortuna's studios sit on Boulevard Jane Sandanski in Skopje's Aerodrom district, a part of the city largely rebuilt after the catastrophic 1963 Skopje earthquake, which destroyed roughly 80 percent of the city and left more than 200,000 people homeless. International aid poured in from about 80 countries through the United Nations, and Japanese architect Kenzo Tange won a UN-organized competition to help redesign the city that followed. Aerodrom, along with much of modern Skopje, took shape in that reconstruction, making Radio Fortuna's studio address itself a small piece of the city's rebuilt post-earthquake identity.

Tune In

Radio Fortuna offers Skopje listeners a straightforward pop and rock mix drawn from Macedonia and the wider Balkan region, broadcasting from a rebuilt corner of a capital city that reinvented itself after disaster and a media landscape that reinvented itself after independence.
