The Franchise That Outlasted Its Own Namesake

Listen Now

Radio Disney La Paz has broadcast pop, reggaeton and youth-focused programming on 102.7 FM since 2011, run under a Bolivian license rather than by Disney itself. That licensing structure turned out to matter more than anyone probably expected when it was set up, because the original Radio Disney in the United States doesn't exist anymore.

A License, Not a Company Outpost

Radio Disney La Paz went on air on September 12, 2011, but the operation belongs to Empresa de Comunicaciones del Oriente, part of Grupo Monasterio, a Bolivian media company that had already secured local television rights to 20th Century Studios and The Walt Disney Company content before adding the radio brand in 2010. Its announcers, drawn from across Bolivia and trained by staff from Argentina, run a pop-and-youth format that mixes reggaeton, K-pop, English-language hits and Spanish-language classics for a family audience skewed young.

Part of a Wave That Started in Buenos Aires

The Bolivian station is one branch of a much larger regional rollout. Radio Disney Argentina launched on April 1, 2001, the first Radio Disney outpost in the region, and the brand went on to spread across more than a dozen countries including Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Bolivia, each run through local partners rather than as a single centralized network.

The Original Went Off the Air in 2021

That local-license structure ended up shielding stations like La Paz's from a decision made thousands of miles away. Disney shut down Radio Disney and its country-format spinoff in the United States in the first quarter of 2021, closing out a 25-year run as part of a broader restructuring toward Disney+ and Disney Channel content. Latin America's Radio Disney stations, La Paz included, were explicitly carved out of that shutdown and kept broadcasting under their existing local agreements.

Still on Air, Still Local

Radio Disney La Paz today plays whatever is moving young listeners, from global reggaeton hits to Spanish-language pop, streaming out of a studio thousands of feet up in the Bolivian Andes. The station that gave the format its name is gone, but the version built on a Bolivian broadcasting license kept right on running.
