One of several genre streams split off a flagship station
Natal, Portuguese for "Christmas," is part of the wider digital expansion Rádio Comercial began in July 2018, when the station moved into a new studio and rolled out a lineup of themed web radio streams, Dance, Kids and Rock among them, splitting specific moods out of its general hit-radio format into dedicated, always-on channels. Natal follows that same template, built purely around holiday music for listeners who want it whenever the mood strikes rather than just during the broadcast season leading up to the 25th.
Soundtrack for a season built around family and fado
Christmas in Portugal centers on the Consoada, the family supper traditionally held on the night of 24 December before Missa do Galo, the midnight mass, with bacalhau standing as the meal's most common centerpiece in many regions. Lisbon and Porto both fill December with carol concerts blending Portuguese villancicos with gospel and fado-inflected arrangements, the same mix of old and new that a dedicated Christmas stream like Natal draws on for its year-round playlist.
