Sixty years under three different names
The station launched in November 1965 as RNE's "Segundo Programa," before going through two further identities, RNE 2 from 1988 to 1994 and RNE C from 1994 to 1999, ahead of settling on Radio Clásica, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It marked its 60th anniversary on 22 November 2025 with a commemorative book written by its own presenters and a double CD surveying six decades of broadcasting, and it picked up a 2025 award from the Asociación Madrileña de Compositores for its support of living Spanish composers.
Classical, but not only classical
Radio Clásica is unusual among Spanish stations for carrying no news bulletins at all, filling its schedule instead with live-presented classical programs, full broadcasts of concerts, recitals and operas, and a broader mix that also makes room for flamenco, folk music, zarzuela and jazz. Its 2025 to 2026 season runs roughly seventy programs with sixteen entirely new additions, and the station recently renamed one of its studios after Fernando Argenta, the broadcaster behind its long-running popular classics program Clásicos Populares.
