La Paz's Tropical Music Station

Listen Now

Radio Chacaltaya streams cumbia, salsa, reggaeton, and merengue live from La Paz, Bolivia, under a slogan that plays on the city's own extreme geography: "Música Tropical con Altura," tropical music with altitude. Tune in on Radio Shuffle and it streams instantly, free, with no account or download required.

Named for a mountain whose glacier disappeared

The station takes its name from Mount Chacaltaya, a peak roughly ten miles from La Paz that once held a genuine claim to fame: for decades it was home to the highest ski resort in the world, sitting so high that its restaurant still holds the Guinness record for highest restaurant on Earth, according to a report on the resort's history. Scientists began studying Chacaltaya's glacier in the 1990s and initially predicted it would survive until at least 2015. They were wrong. The ice, thought to be around 18,000 years old, melted away completely by 2009, and the resort it once supported has sat abandoned ever since.

A tropical outlier at 3,600 meters

Against that stark Andean backdrop, Radio Chacaltaya built a very different kind of identity. Founded in May 1992 in the city of El Alto, the station moved its studios to La Paz in 1994, working out of the Edificio Cosmos building until 1998 before settling into its current home in the Sopocachi district, according to details on the station's own history page. From the start, the station committed to tropical genres like cumbia and salsa at a time when that music was, by its own account, looked down on and dismissed in Bolivia during the 1990s. Rather than back away from that reputation, Radio Chacaltaya leaned into it and became one of the defining radio phenomena of the decade in La Paz.

That commitment shows up in programs like "El Sabor con Z," a tropical music show that has stayed on air for more than a decade, alongside "La Llajuita," dedicated to Bolivian folklore and culture. La Paz itself, the world's highest administrative capital at roughly 3,600 meters, gives the station's "tropical music with altitude" slogan a literal edge that few other stations playing this genre could claim.
