A name built on genuine offshore history

The Radio Caroline name traces back to 1964, when Irish music manager Ronan O'Rahilly launched the original station from a ship anchored in international waters, frustrated that stations like Radio Luxembourg would not play the independent records his artists were making. According to Radio Caroline's own published history, the station kept broadcasting through multiple ships over the following decades, including the Mi Amigo, which sank in March 1980, and the Ross Revenge, a former fishing vessel refitted with towering antennas that carried Caroline back on air by 1983.

A Dutch tribute station, not the ship itself

Radio Caroline 259 Gold operates under the name Radio Caroline Nederland, presenting itself to Benelux listeners as a Classic Rock and Album station built around that same offshore radio heritage. It runs alongside sister streams like Radio Caroline 319 Gold and Radio Monique 963 Gold, sharing branding and a catalogue of Mi Amigo and Ross Revenge photos and history links. The station draws directly on that pirate radio imagery and legacy without claiming to be a continuation of the ship-based broadcasts themselves, making it closer to a dedicated homage than an official successor.

The real Ross Revenge still exists

The actual Ross Revenge, meanwhile, still exists as a broadcast base for the officially licensed UK Radio Caroline, now operating legally on 648 AM and anchored on the River Blackwater in Essex. One weekend each month, DJs still return to the ship itself for live broadcasts, keeping a physical link to the offshore era alive even though the station's main operations moved onto land and into legal licensing decades ago.
