CAFF sounds like it could stand for almost anything, but the letters spell out Club Atlético Fernández Fierro, a Buenos Aires venue built by a tango orchestra that had nowhere else to play. Radio CAFF is that same club's radio station, streaming contemporary tango and rarities 24 hours a day to anyone curious about where 21st-century tango actually lives.
The story starts with the Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro, founded in 2001 by bandoneonist Pablo Gignoli and violinist Federico Terranova in the middle of Argentina's devastating economic and social crisis. The orchestra drew its sound from 1950s tango giants like Osvaldo Pugliese, then injected it with a punk attitude, mixing bandoneon, violin and double bass with electric guitar, drums and saxophone to create something aggressive enough to push tango in directions the traditionalists never expected.
That sound needed somewhere to be heard, and the streets of San Telmo were not cooperating. After facing police harassment while busking, the orchestra's members took over an abandoned mechanic's workshop in 2004 and built a venue from scratch, constructing the stage, lighting and sound system themselves, then registering the space as a sports club to satisfy local regulations, which is where the slightly misleading "Atlético" in the name comes from. The whole operation runs as a cooperative to this day, staffed by roughly twenty people who share ownership of the project rather than answering to an outside promoter.
Radio CAFF grew out of that same do-it-yourself instinct in 2010, built around what its founders call the microradio concept, short, forceful programming with an unmistakable identity rather than a wall-to-wall playlist. It broadcasts the contemporary tango scene the club itself helped create, alongside older recordings and rarities that connect the current generation back to the genre's roots.
