For twenty years, Radio NORA was the sound of Schleswig-Holstein, a station built around German music and heavy doses of regional information. On 2 May 2016, its owner decided listeners wanted something else, and switched the signal to rock.
Twenty Years as Radio NORA, Then a Deliberate Ending
Radio NORA had launched on 3 January 1996 as what its operators called the second Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, running German-language music paired with heavy regional information programming for two decades, according to a detailed account of the rebrand. Martin Hülsmann, CEO of the operating company, explained the switch plainly at the time: "We served listeners well with Radio NORA for decades, but it's time for something new." NORA itself didn't vanish completely, it returned weeks later as a standalone webstream for listeners who still wanted the old format.
Borrowing a Brand That Already Worked in Hesse
Rather than build a new rock format from scratch, the station's parent company Regiocast leaned on a brand it already knew worked. RADIO BOB! had launched on 5 August 2008 out of Kassel, Hesse, opening its very first broadcast with AC/DC's "Hells Bells," a fitting opening statement for a station built entirely around rock. Hülsmann pointed directly to that track record when justifying the Schleswig-Holstein switch, noting the brand would bring proven positioning that Radio NORA's older format couldn't match against the region's mainstream competitors.
Rock From Four Decades, Kiel Stays in Charge
The relaunched station kept its regional news, weather, and traffic desk unchanged and operations based in Kiel, layering a rock-oriented adult contemporary format on top rather than replacing the local team entirely. The programming pulls from four decades of rock, AC/DC and the Rolling Stones sitting alongside Metallica and newer bands, aimed squarely at listeners in their thirties and older who grew up on exactly that catalog.
Part of a Brand Still Expanding
Schleswig-Holstein wasn't a one-off experiment. Regiocast repeated the same regional-offshoot strategy almost a decade later, launching Radio Bob rockt NRW in North Rhine-Westphalia on 13 January 2025, extending a format first proven in Hesse into a third German state. The Schleswig-Holstein station sits in the middle of that expansion, the second region to trade a legacy local format for RADIO BOB!'s rock catalog.
Radio NORA didn't fail. It simply ran its course after twenty years, and Regiocast decided a rock station that already worked in Hesse was a better bet for the north than reinventing NORA for a new decade. Almost ten years later, that bet is still the one playing across Schleswig-Holstein's airwaves.
