A town built on a river valley with medieval roots
Berane sits in the Polimlje region, named for the Lim river that runs through it, an area that was once known as Budimlja under medieval Serbia. The Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery on the Lim's left bank anchors that history, with sources placing its founding around the start of the 13th century, according to Wikipedia's entry on the town. Ottoman forces took the region in 1455, and the modern town itself was founded in 1862 under Husein Pasha before Montenegro absorbed the area after the First Balkan War in 1912. For much of the 20th century, from 1949 to 1992, the town was known as Ivangrad, a name it shed after Montenegro's political changes of the early 1990s.
A local voice on the regional dial
Radio Berane operates as a local public broadcaster serving the town and its surrounding municipality, part of a small but durable tradition of town-level radio stations across northern Montenegro. Its programming stays close to home, mixing local news and community content with music for an audience far more interested in what's happening in Berane itself than in national broadcasts out of Podgorica.
