Radio 538 streams chart hits, dance, and pop music live from the Netherlands, and you can hear it free on Radio Shuffle wherever you are. It is one of the country's biggest commercial stations, built by a team of broadcasters who had already changed Dutch radio once before.
Founded by the team behind Radio Veronica
Radio 538 launched on 11 December 1992 from a villa in Bussum, taking over as the successor to Sky Hitradio, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It was founded by a group of former Radio Veronica staff led by Lex Harding, alongside Peter de Jager, Rob Out, Ton Lathouwers, Ab Trik, and Erik de Zwart, all veterans of the station that had spent years fighting for a spot on Dutch commercial radio. The station's very name is a tribute to that history: 538 refers to the wavelength Radio Veronica broadcast on during the 1970s, a direct nod from the founders to where they had come from.
From a Bussum villa to Hilversum's media district
By the late 1990s, Radio 538 had outgrown its original home and relocated to Hilversum, settling into a studio complex near the town hall in the heart of the country's media industry. That move put the station physically alongside the rest of Dutch broadcasting's major players, cementing its place as a national commercial force rather than a scrappy startup operating out of a villa.
An entire festival built around the station
Radio 538's reach extends well beyond the airwaves through 538 Koningsdag, an annual King's Day festival held in Breda that has become one of the biggest orange-clad celebrations in the country. The event regularly features more than 30 artists spanning pop, dance, and party music, with recent lineups including Afrojack, Snelle, Lucas & Steve, and Ronnie Flex & The Fam, broadcast live across Radio 538, its YouTube channel, and Dutch television. Tens of thousands of fans turn Breda's Chasséveld orange for the occasion every year, giving the station a visible, physical presence that few radio brands manage to sustain.
Three decades of Dutch hit radio
From a small villa broadcast to a Hilversum studio complex and a nationally televised King's Day festival, Radio 538 has grown into one of the defining sounds of Dutch commercial radio.
