Spain's first 24-hour news station
Radio 5 launched on 1 January 1989 as the first rolling, 24-hour radio news service in Spain, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It carried the "Todo Noticias" name specifically from 1994 to 1999, briefly became "Radio 5 Información" between 2012 and 2013, and has run continuously ever since as part of RNE, the radio division of Spain's state broadcaster RTVE. A 2017 doctoral thesis from Madrid's Universidad Complutense, devoted entirely to the station's history, notes it once reached close to a million listeners, a notable figure for a format built entirely on rolling headlines rather than music or entertainment.
Still the only one of its kind in Spain
More than three decades after it launched, Radio 5 remains the only nationwide rolling news radio service in Spain, a format niche it has held without direct domestic competition since the format's early days. Broadcasting from RTVE's Casa de la Radio headquarters in Pozuelo de Alarcón, outside Madrid, it structures its day around repeating news blocks through the morning, afternoon and evening, giving listeners a way to catch up on national headlines at almost any hour.
