From one small room to a national network
The station launched on February 16, 1976 in Milan under the name Radio Studio 105, founded by Vittorio and Giampaolo Ponzone, Cesare Somaini, and Edoardo "Eddy" Hazan, with editorial leadership later passing to Alberto Hazan, according to a detailed history of Italian radio. Its very first broadcasts went out from a single-room studio on Via Tito Vignoli in Milan's Lorenteggio district, on a frequency of 105.560 MHz that later stabilized at 99.100 MHz. The name shortened over the years, from Radio Studio 105 to Rete 105, before settling on simply Radio 105 in 1996. Today the station sits alongside Virgin Radio Italia and Radio Monte Carlo under Mediaset ownership.
The show that took over Italian mornings
Much of the station's modern reputation rests on Lo Zoo di 105, a morning show built around impersonations, prank calls, and irreverent sketches that DJ Marco Mazzoli launched in 1999 alongside colleague Gilberto "Gibba" Penza. The show's content proved controversial enough that it was briefly pulled off air within its first year over complaints about excessive vulgarity, only to be reinstated shortly after. It kept growing anyway: an Il Sole 24 Ore survey named it the most appreciated radio show among 12 to 29 year olds in 2004, and by the end of 2005 it had become the most listened program in its time slot nationwide, overtaking its longtime rival on Radio Deejay.
