A station born from a loophole
Radio 10 first went on air on 4 April 1988, the project of former VARA DJ Jeroen Soer, at a time when commercial radio was still banned in the Netherlands, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Soer got around the ban with what became known as a "U-turn": programmes produced in Amsterdam were beamed by satellite to a station registered in Italy, then relayed back into Dutch cable networks through a Belgian uplink. It was a workaround elaborate enough to make the eventual legalisation of Dutch commercial radio feel almost anticlimactic by comparison.
A name that kept changing, a sound that didn't
The station has worn several names since 1988. It became Radio 10 Gold after the Arcade Group took over in August 1990, switched to Radio 10 FM once it landed an FM frequency in 1999 under the slogan "De grootste hits aller tijden" (the greatest hits of all time), reverted to Radio 10 Gold in 2003 after losing that FM slot, and returned to simply Radio 10 when it got back onto FM in 2013. Talpa Radio, the media company built by John de Mol, acquired the station in 2003, and by 2016 Talpa fully owned its operating company. Through every rebrand, the format barely moved: oldies and adult contemporary, centered on the 1970s through 2000s.
The countdown that takes over December
The Top 4000 itself dates to December 2005, launched to mark the 40th anniversary of the Dutch Top 40, and it has run as a fixture every December since. Each year the station opens voting for weeks, with listeners submitting their favourite songs of all time before the countdown airs continuously from late November through Christmas Eve. Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" has topped the list in all but three editions, a dominance that has made the song's annual return to number one something of a running national joke among Dutch listeners. For the week the countdown airs, Dutch broadcaster NOS has reported that Radio 10 sees a real jump in market share, a bump it tends to lose once rival NPO Radio 2's Top 2000 takes over the airwaves for the final days of the year.
A fight for the same December listeners
That overlap with the Top 2000 is not an accident. Both countdowns chase the same nostalgic, broadly-aged Dutch radio audience during the one stretch of the year when "greatest songs ever" programming draws its biggest crowd. Radio 10's edge is timing: by running first, from late November, it gets first crack at listeners before NPO's version takes the airwaves for the holidays themselves. Recent editions have leaned on familiar faces to hold that early advantage, with presenters like Johnny de Mol opening the vote and hosting dedicated Top 4000 Classics segments alongside the main countdown.
