Fifty years before it became a soft, romantic web channel, the network behind R101 Your Love was breaking Italian broadcasting law out of a bedroom in Milan, with a lookout truck posted outside to warn of the postal police.
Started as an Illegal Broadcast in 1975
R101's story begins on March 10, 1975, when it launched as Radio Milano International, one of the first private radio stations in Italy at a time when private broadcasting existed in a genuine legal gray zone. According to the station's own history, it was founded by two pairs of brothers, all in their twenties, Angelo and Rino Borra and Piero and Nino Cozzi, who ran the operation from a bedroom studio using a repurposed military transmitter and kept a truck stationed nearby specifically to warn of approaching Postal Police. The gamble did not entirely pay off quietly. On April 15, 1975, authorities seized the transmitter, and the station only resumed broadcasting ten days later after a magistrate ruled in its favor.
The Launchpad for Italian Broadcasting Careers
The scrappy start didn't stop the station from becoming a launching pad. Within its first month, a young Claudio Cecchetto joined, and the station later helped shape the early careers of broadcasters including Gerry Scotti, both of whom went on to become fixtures of Italian television. A station built in defiance of the law within a year became a genuine talent pipeline for Italian media.
From Local Pirate to National Network
Radio Milano International expanded to national coverage in 1987 under the name 101 Network, later simplified to Radio 101, before settling on its current name, R101, in June 2005. Along the way it passed through Mondadori ownership before Mediaset took over its editorial direction in 2015 through RadioMediaset, turning what began as an act of broadcasting disobedience into part of one of Italy's largest media groups.
