Q Radio North West

Derry's Adult Contemporary Voice Since 1993

Listen Now

Q Radio North West broadcasts on 102.9 FM from Derry, County Londonderry, playing adult contemporary rock and pop across Northern Ireland's northwest and into neighboring County Donegal. It is one of seven stations in the Q Radio Network, owned by Northern Media Group, but its roots in the city go back further than the network itself.

From Q102 to a Seven-Station Network

The Q brand first appeared in Northern Ireland with the launch of Q102 in Derry in September 1993, broadcasting from studios at the city's old railway station in the Waterside. It took more than two decades for that single Derry station to become the network it is part of today: Q97.2 launched in Coleraine in 2000, Q101.2 followed in Omagh, and a cluster of separately branded stations, Five FM, Six FM, and Seven FM, were folded into the Q Radio name in 2011. A 2015 acquisition of Belfast's Citybeat completed the network, which now reaches a combined 318,000 listeners across Northern Ireland.

A Signal That Crosses the Border

Q Radio North West does not stop at the Northern Ireland border. Its 102.9 FM signal reaches into Inishowen and East Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, giving it a cross-border audience that few other stations in the network can claim, a reflection of how closely Derry's own community ties stretch across the Foyle and beyond the political line drawn through the region.

Broadcasting From the City That Gave Punk "Teenage Kicks"

Derry's music history runs deeper than its current adult contemporary airwaves suggest. In the late 1970s, a small scene built around a handful of teenagers produced The Undertones, whose single "Teenage Kicks" became one of the most celebrated songs in punk history after BBC DJ John Peel played it twice back to back on air in September 1978. That reaction from a single radio broadcast turned a local band with a following of about fifty people into one of the defining acts of the era, a reminder of how much weight a local station's airplay can carry in a city like Derry.

Why Tune In

Q Radio North West offers a steady adult contemporary mix with a genuinely cross-border reach, carrying on a Derry radio identity that traces back to 1993. For listeners across the northwest of Northern Ireland and into Donegal, it remains a familiar local voice in a city with an outsized musical legacy.
