Born from a station split

Pure FM launched on 1 April 2004 as a direct successor to Radio 21, a station RTBF had run since 1981, which went off air the day before on 31 March. RTBF split that older station's audience in two, with Classic 21 taking the classic rock programming and Pure FM picking up a younger-skewing pop, rock and electronic format aimed at listeners between 18 and 35, under founding director Rudy Léonet.

A slow build to its audience

The new station did not land immediately with listeners. Its first ratings survey put Pure FM at just 1.6 percent audience share, well below what RTBF had hoped for a freshly launched youth station. That share climbed over the following years, reaching 2.7 percent by a later survey wave, a gradual recovery rather than an instant hit. The station also shifted its own identity along the way, dropping its original slogan "On respire" in favor of "Good Music Makes Good People" in 2006, and quietly dropping the "FM" from its name in January 2017 to run simply as Pure.

A legacy that lives on in new programming

RTBF eventually moved on from the Pure identity, merging the station with television channel La Deux on 7 September 2020 to create Tipik, a combined brand that absorbed Pure's youth radio audience into a new structure. That same RTBF stable still runs related programming today, including Tipik à l'ancienne, a channel built around 90s and 2000s pop nostalgia, carrying forward the kind of youth-oriented, era-specific music focus that defined Pure FM's original mission back in 2004.
