A Genre Born on Sidewalk Stalls
Disco polo, the genre at the heart of Polmax 3's playlist, started in the late 1980s as what Poles called muzyka chodnikowa, sidewalk music, because early cassettes were sold out of street stalls and bazaars rather than record shops. It grew directly out of wedding band repertoires, taking Polish folk melodies and rhythms and running them through synthesizers and electronic drums. Pioneering groups like Bayer Full, founded in 1984, and Top One helped shape the sound before the term "disco polo" itself was coined in 1993 by record label owner Sławomir Skręta, who borrowed the name from Italo disco.
From TV Staple to "Dead" Genre to Comeback
The genre's biggest wave came between 1995 and 1997, when Polish broadcaster Polsat built entire shows like Disco Relax and Disco Polo Live around it, before pop, rock, hip hop and electronic music pulled listeners away between 1997 and 2001. Polsat canceled its flagship disco polo programming in August 2002, and by 2004 a major Polish newspaper was running headlines declaring the genre dead. It did not stay dead. A revival beginning in 2007, carried by dedicated channels like Polo TV, culminated in Akcent frontman Zenon Martyniuk performing on national television's main New Year's Eve stage in 2016, a full return to the cultural mainstream.
