Broadcasting from one of Europe's oldest cities
Constanța has a claim few radio markets can match: it is Romania's oldest continuously inhabited city, founded as the Greek colony of Tomis by settlers from Miletus around the 7th century BC, according to Britannica's account of the city's history. Rome annexed the region in the 1st century BC, and the city's most famous resident arrived under less happy circumstances: the poet Ovid was exiled to Tomis by Emperor Augustus and lived out the rest of his life there, a statue of him still standing in the city's central square today. The settlement was later renamed Constantiana under Constantine the Great, centuries of Ottoman rule followed, and the city returned to Romania in 1878 under the name it carries now.
A nostalgia station on a genuinely ancient coastline
Play Radio's own footprint is far more recent than its home city, part of a small Romanian network of streams that also runs dedicated 90s, café and urban channels alongside the 91.6 signal, built around listener song requests and a live rundown of what's currently playing. For a station leaning entirely on 80s and 90s nostalgia, broadcasting from a port that predates the Roman Empire by seven centuries adds a strange kind of perspective: four decades of pop music is a rounding error against twenty-seven centuries of continuous settlement, Greek colonists, Roman exiles, Ottoman rule and a 1950s rebuild of a harbor leveled by wartime bombing.
