NRK P3 plays pop music mixed with comedy, entertainment, and youth-focused talk from Norway's public broadcaster, aimed squarely at younger listeners. You can stream it live and free on Radio Shuffle right now, from anywhere in the world.

Norway's Last Major Public Broadcaster to Go Third

NRK P3 launched on October 2, 1993, as NRK's third national radio channel, the product of a broadcasting reform launched the year before under radio director Tor Fuglevik, according to Wikipedia's history of the channel. That made NRK notably slow among major European public broadcasters to build out a multi-channel radio lineup, having only introduced its second channel, P2, as late as 1984. P3 arrived specifically to give Norway's youth audience a dedicated home, built around pop music, humour, entertainment, and health education delivered in Norwegian Bokmål.

A Cult Show That Became a Podcast Phenomenon

P3's most famous program, Radioresepsjonen, ran on the channel from 2006 until late 2010, returned from 2011 to 2013, and then moved over to NRK P13 for a run lasting through 2020. Hosted by brothers Steinar Sagen and Tore Sagen alongside Bjarte Tjøstheim, the show built a genuine cult following across Norway and became the country's most podcasted radio program, pulling more than 200,000 downloads a month at its peak, a scale most traditional broadcast shows never approach once they move to on-demand listening.

Live Music Built Into the Format

Beyond comedy and talk, P3 built its own dedicated concert format with P3 Sessions, live studio performances that debuted in 2003 and have regularly drawn around 100,000 listeners per broadcast. That format gave emerging Norwegian and international artists a direct line to P3's young audience, turning individual studio sessions into some of the channel's most consistently popular programming.

A Roster That Shaped Norwegian Comedy

P3 has served as a launching pad for entertainers who went on to shape Norwegian comedy and broadcasting more broadly, including Thomas Numme, Steinar Sagen, Kristopher Schau, Jørgen Strickert, and Anne Lindmo. The channel also spun off sister stations built around specific music tastes, including NRK mP3, a dance music channel launched July 31, 2000, along with P3 Musikk and P3 Pyro, giving listeners narrower formats without pulling them away from the broader P3 brand.
