NRJ Finland streams pop hits under the slogan "Hit Music Only!" broadcasting nationally from Helsinki as the Finnish outpost of one of Europe's largest radio networks. You can stream it live and free right now on Radio Shuffle, wherever you are in the world.
A Paris Youth Station That Became a Continental Franchise
NRJ's story starts nowhere near Finland. Jean-Paul Baudecroux and Max Guazzini founded NRJ in Paris in June 1981, launching it as a French pop music station aimed squarely at young listeners, according to Wikipedia's history of NRJ Group. The name itself was originally shorthand for "Nouvelle radio jeunesse," new youth radio, before it evolved into a play on the French word for energy, énergie. From that single Paris signal, NRJ Group grew into what is now described as the largest radio network in the world, eventually broadcasting in more than 20 countries across Europe, the Americas, and French overseas territories.
Finland Joins the Network in 1995
NRJ launched in Finland on October 6, 1995, adopting the European Hit Radio format that the broader NRJ network runs across most of its markets, according to Finnish Wikipedia's history of the station. That format lives up to its on-air motto, "Hit Music Only!" a straightforward promise of a chart-focused playlist with minimal detours. The station broadcasts nationally to a country of roughly 4.4 million people, drawing a weekly audience of around 342,000 listeners according to Finland's National Radio Research data.
Sharing a Studio With Radio Nostalgia
NRJ Finland runs its editorial operations out of Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki's old Cable Factory building, a former cable manufacturing plant that has been converted into studio and cultural space. It shares that office with Radio Nostalgia, another station in the same commercial radio family, a practical arrangement that lets two differently formatted stations run side by side out of the same Helsinki base.
Tune In
Fourteen years after a youth-focused Paris station first went on air, NRJ's hit-only format found its way to Helsinki, and it has stayed there for three decades since. Stream NRJ Finland free on Radio Shuffle to hear it live.
