The Netherlands' News and Sport Station That Began as Hilversum 2

Listen Now

NPO Radio 1 is the Netherlands' public radio channel for news, sport and current affairs, broadcast in Dutch around the clock from Hilversum. It is on FM and DAB+ across the country, and you can hear it live on Radio Shuffle for free, whether you are in Amsterdam or on the other side of the world.

What You Hear on NPO Radio 1

The station describes itself on its About page as current, reliable and pluralistic, offering news with context and expert commentary, plus culture, science and entertainment, with live radio day and night and correspondents at big events. Its motto is "Wie luistert, weet meer," which roughly means those who listen, know more. At weekends, sport takes a big share of the schedule. Wikipedia's entry adds that music sits alongside the talk, from classic hits to adult contemporary.

Many Broadcasters, One Channel

Dutch public broadcasting is organised through member associations, and NPO Radio 1 is shared among them. NOS gathers the news, while broadcasters such as KRO-NCRV, BNNVARA, AVROTROS, VPRO, EO and WNL each fill slots with their own take on the day's events, according to the station's site. That structure is a legacy of the Netherlands' old pillarised society, in which religious and political groups each had their own broadcasters.

From Hilversum 2 to Radio 1

The channel began on 15 January 1947 as Hilversum 2, and on 1 December 1985 Dutch public radio dropped the Hilversum names and created Radio 1 to Radio 5 with clearer profiles, with Radio 1 becoming the news and current affairs station, as the Dutch-language Wikipedia page on Hilversum 1 and the station's history summary describe. It gained the NPO prefix on 19 August 2014. The old Hilversum 1, which alternated between confessional and secular broadcasters for years, became today's Radio 2.
