Built for new music discovery
NPO 3FM Alternative sits inside NPO 3FM, the Dutch public broadcaster's youth-focused pop station that has run since 1965. Where the main 3FM signal mixes chart hits with a broader top 40 sound, the Alternative stream narrows the focus entirely to indie, alternative pop, rock, and emerging talent, giving new and touring artists a dedicated home instead of competing for space against established chart music.
Powered by VPRO's music discovery platform
Much of that discovery mission runs through 3voor12, broadcaster VPRO's multimedia platform for alternative pop music, which produces evening programs for 3FM including Club 3voor12 and the techno show Whitenoise. The platform is also known for its Behind Closed Doors sessions, filming touring artists performing acoustic sets in unconventional spaces like elevators, and for running an annual listener-voted Song of the Year that has run since 1985, with past winners ranging from Radiohead and Nirvana to Dutch acts like Krezip and Froukje.
A direct line to Dutch festival season
That same alternative music community shows up every summer at festivals including Lowlands, Pinkpop, and Noorderslag, events closely tied to the 3voor12 platform and the artists it champions throughout the year on 3FM's airwaves.
